Alternatives to Google App Engine

One particularly interesting EC2 third party provider is GigaSpaces with their XAP platform that provides in memory transactions backed up to a database. The in memory transactions appear to scale linearly across machines thus providing a distributed in-memory datastore that gets backed up to persistent storage.

Nati,

GAE has some considerable problems, but its advantage is a low cost entry point, which is its target market. What would be my cost structure for deploying on XAP in EC2?

GigaSpaces is free for startup and provides fairly flexible pricing which include pay-per-use, subscription and perpetual.

You can read on our pay-per use pricing here: http://www.gigaspaces.com/ec2-pricing
I would also suggest that you would read http://gevaperry.typepad.com/main/2008/07/gigaspaces-and.html">GigaSpaces and the Economics of Cloud Computing
