10 Things You Should Know About AWS

Ahead of the upcoming 2nd annual re:Invent conference, inspired by Simone Brunozzi’s recent presentation at an AWS Meetup in San Francisco, and collected from a few of my recent Fluxcapacitor.com consulting engagements, I’ve compiled a list of 10 useful time and clock-tick saving tips about AWS.

1) Query AWS resource metadata

 

Can’t remember the EBS-Optimized IO throughput of your c1.xlarge cluster?  How about the size limit of an S3 object on a single PUT?  awsnow.info is the answer to all of your AWS-resource metadata questions.  Interested in integrating awsnow.info with your application?  You’re in luck.  There’s now a REST API, as well!

Note:  These are default soft limits and will vary by account.

2) Tame your S3 buckets

 

Delete an entire S3 bucket with a single CLI command:  

aws s3 rb s3://<bucket-name> --force

Recursively copy a local directory to S3:

aws s3 cp <local-dir-name> s3://<bucket-name> --region <region-name> --recursive

WEB hosting Select

Hello, I am new to the back end side of things. Love this web site. Read all comments about Amazon hosting, actually I really like Amazon S3 but concerned that it may not be sufficient for my computing needs. And E3 just not too sure. What about hosting sites like host monster? Their prices seem amazing. Are they too good to be true? What are the cons and what are the things I should be considering? I am concerned about costs, but I want user experience to be world class. I am creating a media sharing site. Any help will be great. Thanks Fahad

What CDN would you recommend?

Hi all, a I run a site that after a complete redesign have gotten a lot more traffic. The site provides free flash games, so the biggest traffic share goes to serving flash files (from about 100K and up to several megabytes in size each.) I currently host the entire site on a hosting provider that have no traffic limits. But since they are very cheap (yet have served me very well all the time with at least 99,9% uptime), I don't trust them in allowing me to continue consuming more and more bandwidth. I just guess I'm going to reach some internal limit they have on day, so I'm looking into moving all the flash content over to a content delivery network of some sort. Some recent traffic stats: August: 12 GB September: 22 GB October: 55 GB November: Currently 2,3 GB pr day on average, but it's rising.. I've been looking into Amazon S3, but have not decided on anything yet. So therefor I'm asking if there are any other provides I should consider, that operates within the same price range as Amazon does (or lower)? Best regards, Christian Felde
